Frugal Foodie in Vancouver – Spring 2014

 |  By

We’re back with another edition of “Frugal Foodie in Vancouver!” With the indulgent Christmas season, Dine Out Vancouver, and Valentine’s Day under our belts, it seems appropriate for us to uphold our duty as a Vancouver food blog and highlight a few great finds that are also great on your wallet. Though the timing for this post is prime, this week, I was introduced to something I’d never seen before in Vancouver …and that something inspired this frugal post. Here are four places to visit in Vancouver for those moments when you have no dough but you’re hunger still says, “so?”

1) $2.85 Hamburger. That’s all. Actually, there’s one other item on the menu: $3.50 Cheeseburger. There’s a new food cart in the downtown core, conveniently located in the old Japadog location on W Pender and Granville. I’d tell you what the name of the cart is, but I can’t, because it doesn’t really have a name at the moment. Look for a little white trailer that’s decaled with pictures of burgers.

2.85burger

Don’t get me wrong, the burger isn’t lux…it’s a beef patty, tomato, and iceberg lettuce between a bun. It’s got some kind of sweet teriyaki seasoning. But no Vancouverite can deny that it’s downright impressive for $3.50 (I splurged for the cheese.) Just note, this little cart garners quite the line at noon –  you’ll beat the crowds by stopping by just before or after the lunch rush.

2) Taco Tuesday at Two Parrots

Two Parrots on Granville Street is a great bet for frugal foodies. They’re the kind of place that holds Taco eating competitions and has a 2lb burger that’s on the house if you finish in under an hour (with no trips to the bathroom.) I’ll leave that with you.

Anyways, they do also $1 tacos on Tuesday.

3) The Lunch Special at Thai Basil

Between 11:30 and 3:30 on any given weekday, you can get a serving of Pineapple Fried Rice (with chicken, beef, pork or tofu) for $5.95.

4) The Beef Roll at Peaceful Restaurant

Any Vancouver food blog will rave about the Beef Roll at Peaceful Restaurant. It has a crispy and chewy outside that holds slices of shaved beef, spring onion, and hoisin-sauce goodness. What I think many Vancouver food blogs forget is the price of this hefty and hearty roll: $7.95!
