INTERVIEW: 720 Sweets Opens in Kitsilano

 |  By

When we first saw this photo, we stopped our tracks. There are a few things that we drop on a dime for and Ice Cream encased in Cotton Candy is certainly one of them!

Imagine our enthusiasm when we went on to discover “The Milkee” – crushed walnuts, light caramel drizzle, espresso grass jelly (yes, you heard that right), and crunchy almond cookie. We were salivating at “The Classic” – soft serve topped with rushed graham crackers, sweetened condensed milk, and a freshly baked butter cookie! What was this madness?!

720 Sweets & Etc is Vancouver’s newest ice cream shop (they opened yesterday) and we were thrilled to chat with David, one of 720’s five founders, about the experience…

Q: What inspired you to open an ice cream shop?

A: It’s a project we’ve been working on for a long time! The five of us are from Vancouver and the surrounding areas, and we actually run a few other businesses together. We all love desserts and ice cream and, one day, we were sitting around a table and said, “Why don’t we open an ice cream shop?”

Q: Are your other businesses ice cream related?

A: You might know us from The Richmond Night Market! We run the games there and also own few food stalls that sell crepes and bubble tea.

Q: Why is the place called 720 Sweets?

A: Our initial concept was based around honeycomb and honey. 720 refers to the angles of a honeycomb. As we progressed, we found that we had lots of creative ideas that extended beyond honey, but we kept the name because it’s where we began.

Q: Why Kitsilano?

A: Kitsilano is a great neighbourhood and we really chose it for the location. We’ve put a lot of thought into our branding and presentation. People will find there are lots of cute and thoughtful details around the store.

Q: Now that the store has opened, what are you most excited for?

A: To try out our ideas! We’re hoping to launch something called “720 Battle” – we’ll have two new flavours each month and people can vote for the one that they like best. We have lots of ideas for different flavours from around the world, so I’m looking forward for a chance to experiment.

We wish all the best to the team at 720 Sweets & Etc – there’s a delicious future ahead! Foodies can expect flavours to evolve over the next little while, but stay tuned for their Grand Opening in 2-3 weeks!
