Seafood Series: The Tuna All-Star Line Up

 |  By

Do foodies come to Vancouver searching for the best tuna they’ll ever have? Well, we think that they should. Though BC salmon is constantly in the spotlight, we’ve found 5 occasions where tuna has taken centre stage…and deserves a standing ovation!

Welcome to Part 2 of our Vancouver Seafood Blog Series: The Tuna All-Star Line Up!

1. Tuna Club Sandwich – Local Public Eatery

Though there are lots of great seafood items on Local’s menu, we struggle to pry ourselves away from the Tuna Club Sandwich. One look at the cross-section of this sandwich and tuna-lovers will understand why it’s impossible to resist.

A generous piece of perfectly-seared tuna, snuggly surrounded by all your favourite club sandwich essentials. With a side of fries and the view of Kits Beach, you’ll see why Vancouverites love where we live!

2. Albacore Tuna Salad – Yew Restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel

If you’re envisioning a dainty little salad from a hotel restaurant, think again, Foodies. Think again. This Albacore Tuna Salad on Yew’s lunch menu is a fresh feast – one of the best and well-composed seafood salads we’ve ever had.

The plate is a meticulously organized platter of marinated tuna, crunchy vegetables, spicy scallion vinaigrette, and cashews. What we love about this salad is that each component is showcased in its own right, allowing you to savour and appreciate the quality and cook of the ingredient. The vinaigrette is light and refreshing, which makes for a guilt-free experience when you savour every drop!

3. Canned Tuna – Fable Restaurant

You’re reading it right! Canned tuna has made this all-star list. But, we assure you, the Canned Tuna at Fable Restaurant could not be further from the cans of pale and pasty flakes that are stashed in the back of your pantry. Canadian celebrity chef, Trevor Bird, does the canning in house, transforming the tuna into a buttery, smooth, and refined spread to enjoy over toast. Read our full review of Fable here!

4. Tuna Ta-taco – Tacofino

If you’ve joined us on the World’s Best Food Truck Tour, you’ll know how we adore the Fish Taco from Tacofino. Guests on our tours can attest to the deep-fried, super-crispy ling cod, topped with fresh cabbage, salsa fresca and chipotle mayo that comes out of Tacofino’s White Lightning Truck.

But hey, as much as we love all things deep-fried, we’re all about the Tuna Ta-Taco when we’ve got a hankering for something fresh and cool. The Mexi-Japanese combination of Albacore Tuna, soy, ginger, seaweed salad and wasabi mayo might be a surprising set of flavours, but it’s a seriously addicting one, too!

*This terrific tuna dish is worth hunting down, but note: you’ll need to visit the Commissary (E. Hastings) or catch the Orange Truck on the streets to taste it!

5. Seared Albacore Tuna – Boulevard Restaurant

When it comes to top-quality, Oceanwise seafood, Boulevard Restaurant is the place to be. Like many dishes created by Chef Alex Chen, the Seared Albacore Tuna has a beautiful balance multicultural flavours. The tuna is cooked to perfection, and we love the vibrant pairings of warm chickpea sofrito, meyer lemon, black olive vinaigrette and basil!

Have you had awesome tuna in Vancouver from somewhere that’s not on this list? Tell us about it in the comments below – we’d love to hear from you!

We’ll see you next week with more on the best seafood in Vancouver!
