The Thanksgiving Pregame

Hello October! Can you believe how the time has flown, Foodies? Here we are in October, preparing for one of our favourite feasts – Thanksgiving! We love these occasions as we get to gather with friends and family who we may not always get to see. Though many of us are likely to have one “official” Thanksgiving […]

It’s Still Summer: Seasonal Recipes

Hi Foodies! In what seems like a blink of an eye, the lazy days of Summer have started to slip away. Here at Vancouver Foodie Tours, we’re still living in denial, determined to drain every last drop of joy from Summer before Fall truly hits! We love the feeling of escape that comes from visiting the […]

Hooray! A Very Special Milestone

You guys, you’ve made us Vancouver’s #1 Tour and Activity on TripAdvisor! When we heard that we’d reached the #1 spot on TripAdvisor’s list of Tours and Activities, we almost fell off our chairs. See, just 6 years ago, Vancouver Foodie Tours’ Founder, Michelle, starting hosting food tours on weekends as a hobby. She would take […]

It’s Still Summer: Our favourite cocktails

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise – it’s still summer, right Foodies? We’re not quite ready to let go of the long evenings, the endless ice cream, picnics at the beach, or bike rides around the seawall! This summer, the VFT Foodies have even had a chance to take part in some of Vancouver’s best things […]

New Food Truck Makes a Mean Fried Chicken

As hosts of the World’s Best Food Truck Tour, we keep a keen eye on (and a healthy appetite for) Vancouver’s best street eats. Over the years, it’s been our pleasure to taste our way through the refined, multicultural food scene that has emerged from a category once dominated by hotdogs and smokies. Any local […]

Coming Soon to the Granville Island Public Market

It’s not every day a new shop finds it’s way into the Granville Island Public Market. In fact, many of the stalls in the Public Market have been there since it opened in 1979. This collection of family businesses and local artisans have shaped the bright and friendly community of the Public Market. As hosts of the Granville Island Market Tour, […]

INTERVIEW: BETA5 Chocolates

At first glance, you would never peg Industrial Avenue for a foodie destination. The landscape of this part of Vancouver is almost exclusively concrete – low, boxed-shaped warehouses and large parking lots stretch towards the skyline of the North Shore. But, hidden within one of these nondescript buildings is Beta 5 – one of North’s […]

Road Tripping: Seattle, Washington

Vancouver to Seattle, Seattle to Vancouver – travelling between these two West-Coast cities is one of the best cross-border road-trips to take! The drive takes about 3-hours each way, which means that you can get to Seattle, frolick about town, and return to Vancouver in the same day! For Part 2 of our Summer Road-Tripping […]

Road Tripping: Calgary, Alberta

Have you seen summer in Vancouver? With the sunshine, the ocean, the beach volleyball, the craft beer and the endless patios, it might just be the best place on earth. Yet no matter how beautiful our city may be, the burning temptation to hop in the car and take a road trip is a feeling […]

INTERVIEW: Rain or Shine Ice Cream

It was another rainy November in Vancouver. No one batted an eye at the dreary skies. Yet, a little ray of sunshine was destined for Kitsilano that winter of 2013 – Rain or Shine Ice Cream opened on W 4th Avenue. The city was thrilled to have a boutique ice cream shop in their midst […]

Travellers’ Guide to the Richmond Night Market

The Richmond Night Market is the largest Asian-style night market in North America. From what to wear to what to eat, here are 10 things you need to know before you visit.

The Richmond Night Market is an annual summer food event! With hundreds of street-style food stalls, trinket vendors, and a handful of carnival games, the Richmond Night Market is the biggest of its kind in North America.

Eating at the Richmond Night Market is one of our favourite things to do in Vancouver – it’s a must-see, must-taste tourist attraction for adventurous foodies.

From Bubble Tea to Bubble Waffles, Barbecue Skewers to Japanese Takoyaki, it is a spectacle to have such a diverse set of places to eat in one lively location.

10 Things to Know before you visit the Richmond Night Market

1. BRING CASH

You’ll need $3.75 to get through the gates, but you’ll want cash for all the goodies inside. Food is often sold in $3, $5 or $10 categories, so study those Canadian coins before you arrive!

2. TAKE THE TRAIN

When guests from our Granville Island Market Tour ask us about the Richmond Night Market, they’re thrilled to learn that it’s located beside a Canada Line train station. From the heart of the city (Waterfront Station or Vancouver City Centre), it is a 20-minute ride to Bridgeport Station. Look out for the River Rock Casino (you can’t miss it) and you’ll see the glow of the Night Market across the street.

3. WEAR SOMETHING COMFORTABLE & CASUAL

The Richmond Night Market is actually located in a massive parking lot, so everything is in the open air. Wear something comfortable and casual as you’ll inevitably be wandering through clouds of barbecue smoke and street-style cuisine.

4. COME HUNGRY

It might sound silly, but we can’t stress this enough. There are SO many things to taste and try, you’ll want to capitalize on the opportunity. Portions are relatively small, so you’ll be trying various items over the course of your visit, as opposed to having a large meal from just one place.

5. BRING YOUR OWN WATER

If you have a water bottle, bring it! You can use that $2 on a Cream-Filled Churro.

6. USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM

It’s best to visit the Richmond Night Market with friends! When it comes to Barbecue Beef Skewers, Pork Buns, or Nutella-Filled Waffles, it’s great to have a bite and still have room for the next adventure. So find a foodie friend you trust and eat your way through the market together!

7.  TRY!

When we first visited the Richmond Night Market food stalls, we wanted to see everything first, evaluate our choices, and then make our decisions. This is a pointless strategy. You’ll be lost amongst the rows of tantalizing options and you’ll likely forget which places you hoped to return to. So, if you’re tempted by something, stop and eat it!

8. EAT SAVOURY TO SWEET

Sweet items, especially the Bubble Teas and Shaved Ice Bowls, are quite large in size and deceptively filling. After a sip or two, you’ll be stuck holding the bowl/cup for the rest of the night. Prioritize savoury favourites like Deep-Fried Squid and Chicken Karaage and you can enjoy a sweet treat later in the night.

9. KEEP MOVING

There’s not a lot for seating in the food area at the Richmond Night Market, so be prepared to eat on-the-go. If you do it right, you can be lining up for your next tasting by the time you finish the plate in your hands!

10. LATE-NIGHT PERKS

If you’re eager to get the most bang-for-your-buck, the best time to visit the food vendors is 45-minutes before the Richmond Night Market closes. The food stalls will be wrapping up for the evening will have special prices to get rid of their inventory. Extra dumplings? Don’t mind if we do!

Happy feasting!
